The National Park Service approved a plan to reduce snowmobile access to Yellowstone National Park to less than half of current levels. The 318 snowmobiles per day limit will go into effect over the next two winters until the EPA and the NPS can finish studying the complete environmental impact of the park's use in the winter. Yellowstone is all but inaccessible during snowy months without the use of snowmobiles or snow coaches.

Australian Snipers to Guard Fairy Penguins at Night

Australian Snipers to Guard Fairy Penguins at Night

The Australian Parks and Wildlife Service believes that night vision goggles and sniper rifles might be the right tools to ensure the survival of a little penguin colony.
Little Penguin

The "little penguin" is the smallest known species of penguin on our planet. Fully grown, this penguin only stands about 16" tall, making an adult smaller than a 2 liter bottle of soda. Their tiny size and unique blue plumage has led Australians and New Zealanders to refer to them as "Fairy Penguins." These tiny seabirds are in big trouble, as a threatened population has been attacked repeatedly under the cover of night, leaving no evidence save a tiny, mutilated corpse on the sand.

Plastic Bottle Ship to Raise Awareness About Waste

Plastiki prototype

The Plastiki, under construction in San Francisco, will be no ordinary boat. Plans are to make it from plastic bottles, with a goal of raising awareness about the bottles—and other waste—we leave behind every day. Named in honor of explorer Thor Heyerdahl's raft, the Kon-Tiki, the Plastiki will sail from San Francisco to Sydney through the world's largest garbage dump to carry its message in bottles.

Airline Industry

Airline Industry

Anyone who has ever flown on a long haul flight knows what a mess the plane is in when it lands — discarded papers and magazines, empty plastic bottles and beverage cups and all sorts of unspeakable things stuffed into the seat pocket.

When it comes to airports and planes, the average traveler certainly doesn't think green and that is a huge problem for the airlines and the airport authorities. The figures themselves are staggering:

900 miles per gallon might seem impossible for long-range transportation, but it could be a reality thanks to Lorax Motor Works and their Hauler solar tricycle.
Lorax Hauler

900 miles per gallon might seem incredibly unattainable for long-range transportation, but it could be a reality thanks to the efforts of Lorax Motor Works. The secret is to avoid fossil fuels entirely by using electricity and leg power. Unlike traditional plug-in electric vehicles, which use electricity from greenhouse gas-spewing power plants, Lorax's Hauler is a long-range all-terrain tricycle that runs on solar power and batteries when it's not being pedaled.

National and State Parks in Jeopardy

National and State Parks in Jeopardy

Although $750 million was just allocated to the National Park System, it might be too little, too late, as budget cuts are prompting cutbacks and closures at some parks.
Yosemite National Park

An additional $750 million has been made available to the National Park System as part of the stimulus package, and more money was promised for next year, but is it too little, too late?

Congress established and maintains the National Park System to conserve America's most significant lands and landmarks, yet this valuable asset is being jeopardized by inadequate funding.
