Green Hotel Programs Sprout in Five States

NEW YORK, New York, November 10, 2009 (ENS) - Just since Labor Day, greener hotel operations are being stimulated by new programs in five states and one city that have joined the growing movement to environmentally friendly accommodations.

Certifications for green hotels are newly available in Indiana, Maryland, New York, Oklahoma, South Carolina, and the city of Buffalo, New York.

The National Parks Service announced a plan to cut snowmobile access to Yellowstone National Park to less than half.

The National Park Service approved a plan to reduce snowmobile access to Yellowstone National Park to less than half of current levels. The 318 snowmobiles per day limit will go into effect over the next two winters until the EPA and the NPS can finish studying the complete environmental impact of the park's use in the winter. Yellowstone is all but inaccessible during snowy months without the use of snowmobiles or snow coaches.

The United Nations Development Programme is hosting a photography contest in Ethiopia for photographers to submit their pictures showing people working to positively impact climate change. Co-sponsors, Olympus Corp. and the Agence France-Press Foundation have united with the United Nations Development Programme to help find the photo or collection of photos that best depict the title "Picture This: Caring for the Earth" and which will be judged by Nobel Peace Prize winner Wangari Maathai along with internationally recognized Peter Magubane, three other professional photojournalists.

The secret is to avoid fossil fuels entirely by using electricity and leg power. Unlike traditional plug-in electric vehicles, which use electricity from greenhouse gas-spewing power plants, Lorax's Hauler is a long-range all-terrain tricycle that runs on solar power and batteries when it's not being pedaled.
