Model Gisele Bundchen Is United Nations Newest Environmental Ambassador

NEW YORK, New York, September 22, 2009 (ENS) - One of the world's best known supermodels, Brazil-born Gisele Bundchen, Sunday was designated Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations Environment Programme at a ceremony in New York's Washington Square Park.

In her new role, Bundchen will help UNEP in its mission to raise awareness and inspire action to protect the environment. The new Goodwill Ambassador will help focus attention on some of the greatest threats facing the planet - climate change and environmental degradation.

The federal Trade Commission recently released a consumer alert warning shoppers not to be deceived by unsubstantiated "green" claims from manufacturers of bamboo clothing and soft goods. In the alert, titled "Have You Been Bamboozled by Bamboo Fabrics?", the FTC exposes that bamboo fabric is actually rayon, a man-made fiber that can be derived from any plant cellulose via a chemically intensive process.

The United Nations Development Programme is hosting a photography contest in Ethiopia for photographers to submit their pictures showing people working to positively impact climate change. Co-sponsors, Olympus Corp. and the Agence France-Press Foundation have united with the United Nations Development Programme to help find the photo or collection of photos that best depict the title "Picture This: Caring for the Earth" and which will be judged by Nobel Peace Prize winner Wangari Maathai along with internationally recognized Peter Magubane, three other professional photojournalists.
