Toxic Face Paint Makes for Scary Halloween

SAN FRANCISCO, California, October 29, 2009 (ENS) - Some children's face paints contain lead, a neurotoxin that can harm the brain at low doses, according to new product tests documented in a report from the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics, a national coalition of nonprofit health and environmental groups.

In some of the paints tested, the lab identified the heavy metals nickel, cobalt and chromium, which are skin allergens, even in products labeled "non-toxic" and "hypoallergenic."

Sustainable Spaces Advocates Home Performance at West Coast Green

Sustainable Spaces showed West Coast Green attendees the importance of energy efficiency when taking action against climate change.
Daniel Bell, Home Performance Specialist for Sustainable Spaces

Sustainable Spaces, founded by green thought leader Matt Golden, brought the high-tech tools of home performance to the floor of West Coast Green. Using equipment like a Forward Looking Infrared (FLIR) camera, the crew at Sustainable Spaces explained some of the energy savings and health benefits to be had from performing these specialty renovations. One of the most talked about renovations involves sealing leaky air ducts, which Sustainable Spaces claims leaks about 30% of the air pushed through it.

Why ME?—TeensOnGreen Blog

Why ME?—TeensOnGreen Blog

I decided to create the TeensOnGreen blog because even at 18, I am now concerned for my own future and the future of the kids I might one-day have.

I didn’t pay a lot of attention to the green movement or sustainability until I saw two charts on how the American lifestyle uses resources and produces waste. It shocked me how unsustainable the means by which we attain our lifestyle really were (not our lifestyle itself).

One of the Alarmed by Debbie Deland

I became one of the American’s public 18% that are truly alarmed about Global Warming (based on a recent audience segmentation study called The Six Global America’s). And, I did read and research both sides, e.g., The Deniers and others. It went deeper than climate change for me.

I realized that we were going to bankrupt ourselves due to our reliance on foreign oil and other fossil fuels. The modern world was so much more unfair than had I thought&mdashe;whether here or globally.

A New National Tradition

A New National Tradition

I should have had this blog out the day after President Obama’s speech to our kids, but anytime is a good time for something positive. Unlike most of the media, who now see the speech as a non-event, President Obama’s speech to our kids was historic and superb. I hope our President, no matter who he is after Obama, makes kicking off our children’s school year an annual national tradition. I congratulate Obama and his team for thinking to do it. I can’t imagine time better spent by a president.

EU Phases out Incandescent Lightbulbs

The EU phase-out of incandescent bulbs began last week amid protest. Will America follow suit?
Broken incandescent bulb on a shadowy table.

130 years after Edison tested the first commercially viable lightbulb, EU legislators are finally closing the book on this life-changing, but what some see as an antiquated technology. Restrictions on the sale of incandescent bulbs began last week with the phase-out of 100W incandescent bulbs. These efforts are being hailed as a method of saving energy and combating global warming, yet consumers are still flocking to stores to stock up on the old-style bulbs for aesthetic or personal reasons.

EPA Takes New Steps to Protect American Children from Lead Poisoning

EPA Takes New Steps to Protect American Children from Lead Poisoning

The EPA is informing consumers about the very real danger of lead poisoning in the United States, despite heavy regulatory efforts and lead bans in most products.
Cracking lead paint, with a concealed message of danger faded into the surface.

Today the EPA provided steps to raise awareness about the toxicity of lead-based products and how they are particularly dangerous to children. "Lead is still present in many of our neighborhoods, but we can limit exposure to children and adults by working together on comprehensive actions...,” said EPA Administrator Lisa P. Jackson. “We're committed to giving our nation’s children the fullest protection possible, and giving parents clear assurance that their children are safe from harm.”
