Xcel Energy Foundation Invests in Environmental Education: New Grant to Support the F.R.E.E. Network

(Mpls, MN) – The Xcel Energy Foundation recently announced the recipients of grants in the focus area of the environment. Included in this year’s list of recipients is the F.R.E.E Network, an environmental education resource hosted by Dovetail Partners, Inc.

“The F.R.E.E Network provides access to information about forests and forest resources and supports classroom learning about our environment,” says James Garness, Senior Foundation Representative for the Xcel Energy Foundation in Minnesota.

Water Bills Pass California Legislature Ending Years of Wrangling

SACRAMENTO, California, November 5, 2009 (ENS) - The California state Legislature Wednesday approved a far-reaching water package featuring an $11-billion bond as the Sun rose over the Capitol building after an all night legislative session.

The package includes a comprehensive policy measure that improves water conservation, groundwater monitoring, water rights and governance as well as a water infrastructure bond to be placed on the ballot in November 2010.

This follows news that prominent publications like the Sacramento Bee and networks like Reuters are axing green journalist's jobs. The Society of Environmental Journalists, an industry group, urged professionals not to fret about the scarcity of eco journalism jobs, saying that "no one gains, to overstate the situation.

The Ecology Center of San Francisco (ECOSF), a non-profit dedicated to teaching forgotten ecology skills to San Franciscans, featured a natural building workshop just outside of West Coast Green that taught attendees how to build using ultra-traditional materials like cob, rammed earth, and adobe. The workshop leader joked that dirt in California rarely stands still (a minor earthquake actually occurred the night before), yet adobe villages built in California prior to its admission to the United States nearly 160 years ago are still standing today.

The three days of official activities at the Fort Mason Center was a veritable who's who of green building — and it's no wonder. A plethora of major players in the green space call Northern California their home.

I decided to create the TeensOnGreen blog because even at 18, I am now concerned for my own future and the future of the kids I might one-day have.

I didn’t pay a lot of attention to the green movement or sustainability until I saw two charts on how the American lifestyle uses resources and produces waste. It shocked me how unsustainable the means by which we attain our lifestyle really were (not our lifestyle itself).
