Portland, OR is competing with rival city San Francisco, CA to be the center of America's electric car industry. The unveiling of Portland's first electric vehicle charging station is a direct response to San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom's claim that his Northern Californian city would be the first to support an electric car infrastructure. Mayor Newsom said that the race to a real electric vehicle infrastructure "symbolizes what is the best about our region and our country."
"Portland is striving to be a leader in electric vehicles," said Portland Mayor San Adams. "To be the leader in a place of importation, a place where they are assembled, and a place where they are used today." Home to America's first proposed "Green Borough" which will include the Portland Sustainability Center of Excellence, Portland has been ranked as America's most sustainable city twice in a row by San Francisco based SustainLane. This poises Portland to set an example and competitive pace for other west coast cities who strive to be green. Now that Think and Nissan are near a settlement with the State of Oregon to begin building electric vehicles there, it may be only a matter of time before Oregon reaches its goal of reducing carbon emissions by 80%
