A recurring theme at West Coast Green 2009 is responsible water management. Atmospheric Water Solutions (AWS) saw this as a perfect opportunity to showcase their Dewpointe system, which can draw 8 gallons of 99.99% pure water from the ambient air each day. AWS claims that today's energy prices allow you to harvest water for about 60 cents per gallon, which is a considerable savings when compared to the $2 per gallon you'd pay for bottled water and office cooler refills.
Water harvested by the Dewpointe machine goes through a long process before being deposited in your drink cup. All air entering the Dewpointe is run through an electrostatic air filter to remove dust and pollen. Afterward, the air is super chilled to form dew on coils coated with and FDA approved food-grade coating. This moisture is collected in the unit and run through nine different filters, including a zero-waste reverse osmosis filter and a UV light sanitation system. The water is then stored chilled or heated for your enjoyment.
The AWS Dewpointe system does come at a heavy price tag — about $1600. This would establish a payback period of years, which may be difficult for some to justify for clean drinking water. As clean water scarcity and stories of lax municipal regulations are becoming increasingly prevalent themes in U.S. Environmental Protection Agency press releases, clean water security may move toward the front of the mind of the average consumer. Atmospheric Water Systems is positioning themselves to be in the top of residential and commercial moisture farming should climate crisis transform the industry into a dire human need.
