Solar Decathlon 2009

The Solar Decathlon takes place this October 2009 and spans three weeks. The US Department of Energy will host this year's Solar Decathlon while 20 teams, made up of college students, will compete to come up with the winning solar powered home. Teams must design, build, and create energy efficient homes powered by the sun that are both visually appealing and efficient.

The exact dates of the 2009 Solar Decathlon are as follows:

  • Oct. 8-16—Teams compete in 10 contests
  • Oct. 9-13—Houses are open to the public
  • Oct. 15-18—Houses are open to the public
  • Oct. 19-21—Teams disassemble their houses.

The Solar Decathlon is intended to show how renewable energy can offer solutions in the midst of upcoming energy challenges.

The 10 Solar Decathlon Contests for 2009:

  • Architecture — 100 points (subjective)
  • Market Viability — 100 points (subjective)
  • Engineering — 100 points (subjective)
  • Lighting Design — 75 points (subjective)
  • Communications — 75 points (subjective)
  • Comfort Zone — 100 points (objective)
  • Hot Water — 100 points (objective)
  • Appliances — 100 points (objective)
  • Home Entertainment — 100 points (objective)
  • Net Metering — 150 points (objective)

The homes will be dismantled and rebuilt at the National Mall in Washington DC.

The event will be open to the general public to observe the teams' progress between 11:00 AM and 3:00PM Monday through Friday. The public may visit the houses on the weekends between 10:00 AM and 5:00PM.
