Los Angeles producer Ady Gil hosted a fundraiser last weekend in hopes to raise $5 million to replace the ship bearing his name that was sunk in conflict between Sea Shepherd conservationists and the Japanese whaling fleet. The $50-per-person event featured vegan hors d'oeuvres and a special announcement that Gil himself would be protesting outside of Japan's Los Angeles embassy.
Sea Shepherd Boat Sliced Open in Confrontation with Whalers
Sea Shepherd's multi-million dollar stealth boat, the Ady Gil, was terminally disabled this morning after it was struck by a Japanese whaling boat it was harassing. The stealth boat, which is fueled by vegetable oil and animal fat and also holds a nautical speed record, was struck across the bow by the Japanese whaling boat, the Shonan Maru No. 2. Video taken of the collision shows the Ady Gil accelerating prior to impact, but it is unclear if the Japanese whalers made any attempt to slow down or turn away from the smaller vessel.
Japanese Whalers Clash with Sea Shepherd Over Antarctic Hunt
Japanese whalers and conservationist groups like Sea Shepherd are clashing in Antarctic waters yet again in what has become a decade-long conflict over the hunt of non-endangered Minke whales. In previous years, the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society has been documented to use stink bombs filled with butryic acid and physically ramming Japanese whaling vessels in an attempt to sabotage the Japanese whaling expeditions, which operate under the guise of a research project.
