Looking for a fun and earth-friendly way to spend 6-months of your life? How about walking from Mexico to Canada? Beginning at the Mexican border and concluding at the Canadian border, Cookie and Paul, two English gentlemen, began their 3000 mile hike along the Continental Divide Trail in May of 2008. Along the way they will travel through New Mexico, Colorado, Wyoming, Idaho and Montana. As of August 15th, Cookie and Paul were traveling through Wyoming making their way towards the Idaho border.
The Continental Divide Trail is said to exhibit some of the most beautiful wilderness in America. It even runs through Yellowstone National Park (WY), Rocky Mountain National Park (CO) and Glacier National Park. Despite the astounding beauty along the trail, Cookie and Paul are undertaking this incredible endeavor for reasons far more admirable than the scenery. They hope to raise funds for The Cystic Fibrosis Trust and advance awareness about this incredibly common genetic disease. In the UK, over 8,000 people are currently affected by Cystic Fibrosis.
To accomplish this goal takes exhaustive planning, a love of nature and a good pair of shoes. If you have ever dreamt of going on a real-life adventure, I’d say this is almost as good as it gets. In today’s society where capitalism, technology and individualism are paramount, it is refreshing to come across individuals who hold an appreciation for the magnificence of nature and the well-being of their fellow human beings. I am often discouraged by selfish attitudes and nonsensical endeavors that revolve around making money at the cost of happiness and contentment. Money cannot take the place of love, companionship or humanity. Instead of taking that gas guzzling road-trip this summer, you might want to experience the country by means of a more old-fashioned form of travel — your feet.
